A BATTLING Jersey side suffered defeat against Germany in the European Division Two qualifier for the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup.

Having comfortably dispatched Italy on the opening day of the tournament, the Island side were confident of repeating that success.

But, batting first at Grainville, they suffered a disastrous start as they were reduced to 20-6.

The seventh-wicket partnership of Analise Merritt and Grace Wetherall launched a counter-attack that gave Jersey a respectable total to try to defend. Wetherall reached her half-century in the 19th over, eventually finishing on 57 not out, while Merritt hit an unbeaten 45 as Germany were set 122 to win.

Jersey Captain Chloe Greechan took an early wicket in Anne Bierwisch, but Christina Gough’s knock of 70 not out helped fire Germany to a nine-wicket victory.

The Islanders have little time to bounce back as they take on Turkey later on Tuesday afternoon.
