ST AUBIN’S BAY was turned into a mini Copacabana on Friday night with the return of the footvolley competition for a third year running.

With DJ Hedgie supplying the samba beats, 12 teams of three attempted – with mixed results – to inject a bit of joga bonito on the beach by the Gunsite Café.

All that was missing was the sun.

The tournament was won by UNEX – made up of St Brelade players Brad Gollop, Jamie Hamilton and Jordan Le Guyader – who beat Le Clos le Breton (Dylan Buesnel, Eoin Lynam, Kieren Stephens) in the final.

The result of the day, however, came in the quarter-finals when the St Paul’s White, made up 15-year-olds Harry Davy, Callum Gilroy and Finley Thomson, thrashed an all-star Jersey Bulls team of Sol Solomon, Luke Campbell and Kamen Nafkha, 25-9.

Organiser James Scott said: ‘The footvolley event was a success once again.

‘There were constant laughs about the standard of some of the players’ team-mates’ displays.

‘To be fair some of the play, especially from the younger lads, was a joy to watch sometimes.

‘The standard is definitely getting better each year.

‘It’s the third year it’s taken place and a big thanks to DJ Hedgie for creating a great atmosphere and the Gunsite Café for supporting the event.

‘If the football community want me to organise it again next year, then I’m happy to do it.’
