Players keen to make a racket in inter-insular

Matt Boote number 1 seed (37635971)

INTER-INSULAR rivalry makes its way to the Jersey Squash and Racketball Club tomorrow, with three matches in each sport taking place.

Jersey are the overall defending champions after winning 18-12 last year in Guernsey and have been dominant of late in both the men’s A and ladies A squash and racketball events.

Guernsey, however, do have a strong men’s B team and a new face in the veteran’s category in Martin Watts. Sadly this year, Guernsey has not fielded a women’s team for squash.

Charlie Griggs, Jersey’s current number one, is travelling over from the UK to lead the Jersey men’s squash team.

Matt Boote, recently crowned Island champion, and Antony Harkin, the academy head coach, are the top three seedings for Jersey. Stanley Tanguy and Sé Price, both under 21, are also selected for the men’s A team for the first time.

Richie Brocken, a multi racket sports expert is playing at number one for Jersey at racketball. Several new faces have made the A team such as Jon Southern, Will O’Dwyer and Ed Fletcher. Charlie Journeaux, a seasoned squash-turned-racketball player, is also in the A team of five. Aush Fletcher and Val Brown are both playing in the ladies racketball and should expect some tight matches with their Guernsey opponents.

Play is scheduled from 10am until 4pm with the A squad matches starting from around midday. Visitors are very welcome to the club and Boasters bar will be serving throughout the day. The event and Jersey team kit has been sponsored by TLC Finance.
