Tigers add to County Championship success

Calligo Tigers' swimmers collected a healthy haul of county medals in Winchester

CALLIGO TIGERS finished on a high on the final weekend of the Hampshire County Championships as they picked up another 25 medals in the pool.

It was the turn of the youth swimmers this time in Winchester and they continued where their team-mates had finished off over the previous two weekends, giving the club a total of 116 medals, including 44 gold, 38 silver and 34 bronze.

In the 15-year-old category, Filip Nowacki led the charge, taking home seven county titles in the 50m butterfly, 100m butterfly, 200m individual medley, 400m individual medley and 50m, 100m and 200m breaststroke, which were all Island junior and club records. He also claimed silver in the 50m and 200m freestyle.

In the 16-year-old age band, Megan Hansford swam herself into the record books, taking her first Island junior record in the girls 100m backstroke, a record that had stood since 1995. That swim was one of four county titles, coming in the 50m, 100m and 200m backstroke and 50m butterfly. She was also a finalist in the 50m and 100m freestyle.

Luke Flemming claimed his maiden title, smashing his lifetime best to take home gold in the 200m backstroke, while Sam Sterry twice missed out on gold to team-mates in the 200m backstroke and 200m individual medley. Those silvers were backed with another in the 200m butterfly, making that three for the weekend, while he also took bronze in the 400m freestyle and 400m individual medley.

In the 15-year-old girls section, Alana Woodhall claimed Hampshire titles in the 200m and 400m individual medley and 200m backstroke and Sienna Stephens’ form saw her claim the county title in the 200m butterfly.

Meanwhile, Jersey Swimming Club also took one swimmer to the championships.

Robin Carnegie attended the county championships for the very first time to compete in four events: 50m and 100m backstroke and 50m and 100m butterfly events. He made it throughout the heats to the finals in the 100m backstroke and 100m butterfly to finish in eighth place in both events.
