Lack of funding partly to blame for Super League Triathlon cancellation

JERSEY has been omitted from the 2022 Super League Triathlon Championship as a result of ‘economic and scheduling factors’.

Despite being likened to showpiece Formula 1 venue Monaco in 2021, having featured on the event calendar since SLT’s inception in 2017, the Island has lost its place at the forefront of plans and Caesarean fans will watch from afar as the world’s top triathletes tour Europe and the USA.

In 2018, Government of Jersey officials penned a five-year deal with SLT – on a ‘two-plus-three-year’ basis – and approved an annual budget of £250,000 to host the event, via the Economic Development Department’s events and tourism development fund. That deal should have included 2022 but it is understood that insufficient private sponsorship has been secured.

The SLT wagon will instead travel from London to Malibu via Munich in September, before visiting Toulouse and an as-yet-unnamed venue in October.

‘Jersey has been the spiritual home of Super League Triathlon, loved by fans and athletes alike,’ said SLT chief executive Michael D’hulst.

‘Unfortunately for 2022, economic and scheduling factors mean it will not be possible to host the event but we hope to return again in the near future. I would like to thank all in the [Economic Development Department] for their unwavering support in helping us to deliver the event over the past four years, and also to the community of Jersey, who have been so supportive.’

He added: ‘Super League Triathlon continues to expand and we will now head to exciting destinations, with events in all the major triathlon markets as part of our commitment to drive innovation, develop a true spectator sport and create even greater value for our athletes.’

Team GB Olympic medallists Georgia Taylor-Brown and Alex Yee won the Championship Series in 2021, after claiming podium finishes on the Waterfront earlier in the campaign.
