SERENA GUTHRIE was the focus of countless superlatives on Sky Sports after steering England to two wins from two in the 2022 Quad Series.
The Islander was named player-of-the-match at the Copper Box Arena as the Roses beat world champions New Zealand 49-46 – a result which sends them into the final with one game to spare.
England’s latest victory over the Silver Ferns came after a 15-goal swing. They fought back from eight goals down to lead by seven early in the fourth quarter.
‘Against New Zealand it’s a unit effort,’ Guthrie told Sky Sports. ‘You can’t beat this team one-on-one. Thankfully the girls made me look good today.’
Discussing her side’s recovery midway through the match, Guthrie added: ‘We don’t want to go eight down. We don’t want that to be a habit, so that’s a bit disappointing, but we know we can come back now. We have lots of experience against this team and I’m proud of the girls. I’m really happy we could find a way to win.’
England, who set a new Quad Series goal-scoring record on their way to a 71-47 victory over South Africa on Saturday, meet Australia in the final round-robin clash on Tuesday, before returning on Wednesday for the final.
