Odell Beckham Jr signs five-year contract extension with New York Giants

Record-breaking wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr has signed a five-year contract extension with the New York Giants.

The Giants have not announced how much the deal is worth, but reports suggest it could be up to 95 million US dollars (£73.8m), which would be an NFL record for a wide receiver.

The 25-year-old has broken a host of Giants records since being selected 12th in the 2014 Draft and is a regular on NFL highlight reels due to his collection of spectacular catches and touchdowns.

Giants general manager Dave Gettleman said on the team’s website: “It’s a five-year extension, six years total.

“We got him until he’s 108. I never worried whether or not we would get it done. I’m pleased, because the litmus test for a contract is that neither side is ticked off before the ink can dry, and neither side should be ticked off. It’s a very fair deal.”

Beckham said: “Honestly, I don’t even know how to explain it.

“I don’t know if it’s a relief, I don’t know – it’s a combination of everything. You’ve worked all your life to get to this point and it’s finally here.

“It was just a time of patience and waiting and I knew that it would get done, it just was a matter of when and I’m just so happy that it is finally done now.”

Beckham missed much of last season with a broken ankle but is set to be fit for the Giants’ opening match of the upcoming campaign, against the Jacksonville Jaguars on September 9.
