Brighton are set to contest the violent conduct charge against striker Tomer Hemed, Press Association Sport understands.
Hemed scored the only goal as the Seagulls beat Newcastle in a Premier League clash at the Amex Stadium on Sunday.
However, the Israeli forward was later involved in a coming together with DeAndre Yedlin during the closing stages, and appeared to stamp on the Newcastle defender’s leg.
The Football Association subsequently charged Hemed with “an alleged act of violent conduct which was not seen by the match officials but caught on video”, setting a deadline of 6pm on Tuesday for a response.
Brighton boss Chris Hughton had defended Hemed after the game, insisting the Israel international’s stamp on Yedlin was a pure accident.
Press Association Sport understands the club will contest the charge, which if proven could result in a three-match suspension.
Speaking following his side’s 1-0 victory on Sunday, Hughton said: ”I have seen it, and my absolute impression was that there was no intention, particularly knowing the player.
”My first impression was that there was absolutely no intent. I was unaware of it at the time, and I have just been shown it.”
Brighton continue their Premier League campaign at Arsenal on Sunday ahead of the international break.
