ON THIS DAY IN SPORT
1956: Portsmouth beat Newcastle 2-0 in the Football League’s first floodlit match.
1964: Rugby league great Brian Bevan played his last match. He spent 17 years with Warrington before moving to Blackpool Borough. From 1946 onwards he scored a record 796 tries. He died in 1991.
1979: Inverness Thistle and Falkirk’s Scottish FA Cup tie was finally played – after being postponed a British record 29 times because of the weather. Falkirk won the second-round tie 4-0.
1991: Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish announced his unexpected retirement after his team’s 4-4 FA Cup draw with Everton. Dalglish was to return to football a few months later, taking charge of Blackburn.
2003: Shane Warne was banned from cricket for a year – ruling him out of the World Cup – after he tested positive for banned diuretics.
2007: The All England Club announced that men and women would receive equal prize money at the Wimbledon tennis championships. It was the first time in the tournament’s history that there had been equal pay for men and women.
2010: Former Great Britain hooker Terry Newton had his contract terminated by Wakefield after admitting using human growth hormone, and was banned from all rugby for two years by UK Anti-Doping. In September 2010 Newton was found hanged at his home.
