Joe Westerman: I felt like I had to just smack my kneecap back in

Hull loose forward Joe Westerman expects to be in contention to play in next week’s clash with Super League leaders St Helens, despite dislocating his knee against Hull KR on Thursday evening.

Westerman injured himself after being tackled in the 76th minute, and the 29-year-old was seen pushing his kneecap back into place whilst lying on the ground.

Incredibly, Westerman played the remainder of the match – where his side lost 18-10 at KCOM Craven Park – and earned praise from hundreds of rugby league fans for his bravery.

Speaking to the club’s official website, Westerman said: “It’s sweet, to be honest. I expect to be training next week and I can’t really see myself missing our next game against St Helens next Friday.

“I just twisted in the tackle and Mose Masoe came in with the chop and my knee just popped out. There was no malice in the tackle or anything like that.

“I looked at my leg and saw my kneecap on the side and I felt like I had to just smack it back in. It wasn’t really an excruciating pain. It freaked me out more than anything because it looked so weird.”
