Overseas Aid launch paid internship

In partnership with HelpAge International, JOA is giving someone the opportunity to work with professionals in international development in both Jersey and the UK before going on a six-month assignment in a developing country.

The successful candidate, who will start work in February, will be appointed a mentor by HelpAge, a charity that supports older people worldwide. The intern will be paid a basic annual salary of £20,000 as well as an additional allowance of £900 during their time in London.

JOA plan to run the internship every year and over time the goal is to build up a group of Islanders who are connected to development professionals working for different agencies around the world.

In February the chosen intern will spend a month in JOA’s Jersey office, before going to HelpAge’s head office in London for three months, where they will work in a number of departments across the organisation.

By May the intern will be posted to one of the charity’s projects in Asia, Africa or the Middle East. Deputy Carolyn Labey, chairwoman of JOA, said: ‘As well as being a life-changing launchpad for several fortunate individuals, this will help translate the huge support for charity and philanthropy on our Island into concrete assistance for the world’s
poorest and most vulnerable people.’

There is no age limit or specific requirements needed to apply for the role but the individual must have an enthusiasm for a career in development. They must be entitled to live and work in Jersey, having been born or spent at least five continuous years on the Island.

Jenny Moncada, head of HR at HelpAge International, said: ‘We are very excited to be able to offer this opportunity as we recognise the industry can be a hard one to break into, we are looking forward to working alongside JOA to grow opportunities for access to employment for those people who are really committed to working in the international development sector.’

Details about the internship and how to apply can be found on JOA’s website: joa.je. Alternatively send a CV and a covering letter to T.lebas@joa.je by Friday 13 October.
