Despite being half of its normal weight, the animal is said to be strong and healthy and even gave staff a ‘hard time’ during its overnight stay at New Era Veterinary Hospital in St Saviour on Wednesday night.
Now, following its discovery by La Frégate café staff, the seal has been called Andrew by one of the vets at New Era, after the ‘Christmas frigate’ bird – known by its latin name as fregata andrewsi.
Donna de Gruchy, Jersey co-ordinator of the British Divers Marine Life Rescue, said that she was cautiously optimistic about Andrew’s survival.
‘He seems to be strong and healthy and gave all the New Era staff a hard time, so I think this one might be OK,’ she said.
‘We have got all of our fingers crossed for this one.’
The GSPCA facility features a number of purpose-built rehabilitation pools and have cared for a number of seals and turtles previously found on Jersey’s coastline.
Anyone who comes across a seal is asked not to touch them and put any dogs with them on a lead before calling the JSPCA on 724331 or the Environment Department on 441600.
