Our vision

Our mission is simple – to engage, inform and encourage Islanders to embrace environmental issues and to come together to achieve something positive for our community and beyond, now and for generations to come.

In many ways, we are adding our voice to a rising tide of awareness about the need to act now, but there are still people who are not convinced that real change is needed.

Few people can answer that question as eloquently as did Sir David Attenborough when he addressed delegates at the recent UN climate change summit.

‘Right now,’ he said ‘we’re facing a man-made disaster of global scale, our greatest threat in thousands of years: climate change.

If we don’t take action, the collapse of our civilisations and the extinction of much of the natural world is on the horizon…time is running out.’

It makes for grim reading. But he continues “together we can make real change happen. The world’s people want you, the decision makers to act now.

They’re behind you, supporting you in making tough decisions but also willing to make sacrifices in their daily lives… because they recognise they too must play their part”

Eco Jersey aims not only to explain why change is necessary, but also to offer advice on making it a reality for Islanders, whether as individuals, families, schools or businesses.

We have been lucky enough to have had the support of many in the community who are leading by example and striving for positive change.

A huge thank you to them, our commercial and business partners and the many others who have come together to offer their thoughts and ideas to help us produce this launch edition.

Attitudes are changing for the better in Jersey, but in so many areas there is a great deal of work still to be done.

We hope ecoJersey engages, informs and encourages action, and continues to do so as we bring it to you quarterly.

The next edition in three months’ time will focus on Jersey as a world-leading eco-community.

The stakes couldn’t be higher, but with the collective will of government, business and individuals, each and every one of us, it’s not yet too late.
