Letters to the Editor: It is frustrating, but the works have to be done

The collapse of the road surface has required the closure of Mont Les Vaux in St Aubin (34018462)

From David Norman.

WHILE I agree wholeheartedly with Tony Bellows’ plea (JEP letters 11 August) for an access to premises for residents living on La Verte Rue instead of a three-mile wander around St Brelade to get back home, having experienced a similar situation when Mont Les Vaux was resurfaced a couple of months ago, the reason for this is it doesn’t really help and it is difficult to police.

We were literally the last house before the works on Mont Les Vaux and so very frustrated at not being able to drive through to the church car park only yards away, instead having to take a three-mile detour via La Haule, Pont Marquet, and Route des Genêts before going down Mont Les Vaux to return home.

I would spend my evenings sitting on the front porch watching literally hundreds of cars drive down the hill only to reach the road works and then have to U-turn in the road to get back up the hill, just because they thought they would chance the ‘access to premises’ route in case they could get through to St Aubin from Woodbine Corner.

The works have to be done, and the guys doing the work are yet again working in blistering heat doing a grand job and yet we complain when we cannot access our properties for a few weeks while the work is in progress. Sometimes we take access too easily and although yes, it is very frustrating, more traffic will try to get through ‘access to premises’ just on the off-chance they can get through, causing more inconvenience and possibly danger as they chance their luck.

I do feel for the residents semi trapped, as we have been through similar ourselves.
