Luckily, he was spotted by a member of the public who knew the rock he was standing on would soon be submerged by the incoming tide and called the Fire and Rescue Service.Firefighters launched the inshore rescue vessel just before 4 pm and pulled the 28-year-old man to safety.

Despite being in the water only a relatively short time, he was so cold that he was not able to give his name and was shivering uncontrollably.He was taken to the General Hospital by ambulance.As the Fire Service prepared to issue a statement at 6.50 am today warning of the dangers of fishing off rocks without local knowledge, a call was received about a man cut off by the tide.

He too had been fishing from rocks off Green Island.A passer-by rang the Harbours Office and the Fire Service was alerted.

The man managed to get himself ashore and was taken back to St Helier by the Fire Service.
