Badminton: Kerry’s crown at the Gilson

Keeping it in the family, husband Ian competes in the men’s final on Thursday, against fellow-Commonwealth Games player Gavin Carter.

Former Island Games singles gold-medallist and Commonwealth Games player Kerry Coombs-Goodfellow beat U17 Guernsey Open winner Kim Ashton 21-5 in the final, having had a smooth passage to the final, dropping just ten points en route, the closest encounter being the final.

Most of the Island’s top under 15s competed – Tom Gibbs, Ben Watson, James and Piers Le Moignan, Eve Watson and Katherine Thornton – and all did themselves justice.

There must surely be a future Island champion or two among them.

Both Ben Watson and James Le Moignan registered victories against much older and stronger opposition in their respective groups.

In the men’s event both 11-times winner Coombs-Goodfellow and Carter, who has yet to win the title, were comfortable winners of their respective groups and semi-finals.

Coombs-Goodfellow, who retired from competitive play outside the Channel Islands following the 2002 Commonwealth Games, defeated county player Clive Dunford in the semis, 17-14, 15-6, while Carter saw off the challenge of last year’s runner-up, Colin Hardwidge, 15-5,15-6.

Earlier, Dunford had a fairly close 21-16 win over another county player, Dave Luce and Hardwidge defeated Jamie Smith 21-15.

Play continues tonight with the men’s and ladies doubles.
