Men against boys is not a fair contest

Men against boys is not a fair contest

From Robert Schofield.

IT is hardly surprising that the International Under 21 football event has had to be cancelled (JEP, 3 June) for the lack of sponsorship and the hesitancy of major football clubs to commit to the event.

Why would any sensible top flight team bring over what often amounts to their starlets, many of whom are under 18, only to end up facing Jersey’s senior team?

Men against boys is hardly what these clubs believed that they were signing up for. Similarly why would any reputable sponsor seek to be associated with this unseemly sporting ambush?

The embarrassment when the Jersey team actually won the last tournament and went to enthusiastically lift the trophy was, to many Corinthians, excruciating. At the time the bemused and crestfallen faces of Barcelona’s babes, the gallant losers, said it all.
