Group pushes for political engagement

Representatives from the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association will visit two schools – JCG and Hautlieu – to discuss the political values of the Commonwealth and give students an opportunity to raise concerns about the Island. The last time the CPA visited the Island was in May 2016.

During the visit, which is being led by the CPA Secretary General, Akbar Khan, representatives are also due to meet with States Members and the Lieutenant-Governor, Air Chief Marshal Sir Stephen Dalton.

The visit takes place ahead of the 2018 Commonwealth Summit that is due to be held in the UK next April.

Mr Khan said: ‘I am delighted to return with the CPA Roadshow to Jersey for the second time to engage with local students on the values that unite the Commonwealth.

‘The CPA’s public engagement work across the Commonwealth and efforts to engage young people in the democratic process by discussing the importance of the Commonwealth are key objectives of the CPA, and our visit to Jersey will emphasise this.

‘The CPA is the only Commonwealth body that works to strengthen the assemblies and legislatures in the Crown Dependencies, such as the States Assembly in Jersey, as well as national, state and provincial legislatures.

‘The relationship between Jersey and the CPA is therefore key to providing a platform to develop good parliamentary practice and to share good practice with other similar legislatures across the Commonwealth.’
