Woman who assaulted paramedic is remanded in custody

Maria Ivone Vieira (38), of Route de St Aubin, also admitted assaulting a man on 16 August.

Legal adviser Advocate Carla Carvalho said: ‘Paramedics are public servants who deserve the protection of the court. The paramedic was there to assist the defendant.’

Probation officer Nicky Allix said that the defendant, who had a long-standing drink problem, was not considered suitable for probation or community service.

By pleading guilty, Vieira was in breach of a six-month binding-over order imposed on 28 July after being convicted of conduct likely to cause a breach of the peace.

Assistant Magistrate Peter Harris said that paramedics had to be able to do their jobs, although he added that it was accepted that the assault ‘was at a low level’.

He said: ‘She has committed six offences this year and I am pretty sure all of them relate to alcohol. I don’t want to rush sentencing and I am going to adjourn the case for an advocate to be appointed to have more time to review the situation.’

He added: ‘Although some time has passed since these matters I am aware that alcohol continues to be a problem and I fear that she will get deeper and deeper into trouble.’

Sentencing is due to take place on 5 October.
