Paedophile rapist given a 12-year jail sentence

Antony John Quant repeatedly attacked his victims more than 30 years ago, raping one of the children up to 75 times.

His crimes were so horrific that all three of his victims have been left with mental-health issues, including depression and post-traumatic stress disorder.

Yesterday, after Quant received one of the longest jail terms handed down by the Royal Court in recent years, the States police praised the courage of the victims.

Detective Sergeant Lynda McKenna said: ‘These victims have shown incredible courage throughout the case, having carried so much trauma with them for so many years.

‘They have all been deprived of the innocence of children. This case shows that no matter the passage of time, the States police will work with victims to put an offender before court. This abhorrent behaviour will not be tolerated in our society.’

Following an Assize jury trial in February, Quant (50) was found guilty of eight charges of indecent assault, seven of rape and five of sodomy.

He committed the offences while he was aged between ten and 20.

Two of the victims first made a complaint against Quant in 1992 and he was interviewed by the police the following year but the case was dropped because of a lack of evidence, the Superior Number heard yesterday.

It was reopened in 2016 after the police contacted one of the victims.

Crown Advocate Emma Hollywood, prosecuting, told the court that Quant manipulated his victims by giving them sweets and chocolate.

Describing one of the victim’s ordeals, she said: ‘She felt frightened and confused and recalled thinking to herself, “I can never tell anyone about this”.’

The advocate, who called for a prison sentence of 16 years, added that the defendant still denied the offences, had threatened violence against his victims for making the allegations against him and intended to appeal against his conviction.

Advocate Francesca Pinel, defending, said that many of the defendant’s crimes were committed while he was a minor himself.

Advocate Pinel suggested that a 12-to-13-year jail sentence would be more appropriate.

As well as being jailed, Quant was placed on the Sex Offenders Register for ten years.

Deputy Bailiff Tim Le Cocq was presiding and sitting with Jurats Anthony Olsen, Charles Blampied, Sally Sparrow, Robert Christensen and Elizabeth Dulake.
