Organ opt-out donation system due this summer

Health Minister Richard Renouf has lodged a proposition setting out the timetable for the Island’s new Human Transplantation and Anatomy Law.

The new law will come into force on 1 July, providing this date is approved by States Members in June. It was originally introduced by previous Health Minister Andrew Green and overwhelmingly backed by Members in April 2018.

The scheme will be a ‘soft opt-out’ version, where doctors will continue to discuss the matter with a potential donor’s next of kin, who will still retain the right to veto donations.

Deputy Renouf has also lodged regulations to accompany the new law, setting out how Islanders will record their wishes via the UK Organ Donor Register.

A campaign to raise awareness of the issue is scheduled to be unveiled shortly.
