Family hit by fire thank Islanders for rallying round

In May, the blaze that started in their kitchen ripped through the Keywoods’ home in Maufant, destroying everything inside and claiming the life of their French bulldog, Ollie.

After the fire, mother Krin lived in hotels for weeks and her daughter Charlotte stayed with friends as she juggled exams.

Household items and cash donations flooded in from Islanders, with almost £7,000 raised in total from a Just Giving page online.

The money has helped the family to furnish their new rented home and almost three months on from the fire the family have expressed how thankful they are for the support.

Miss Keywood also said she was thankful things were not a lot worse.

She said: ‘It has just been so humbling. We had nothing, and were only able to get a few bits from the house – my daughter’s prom dress and my son Matt got his guitar.

‘The money has helped us furnish this new place in St Saviour and we are so grateful to everyone’s support.

‘You see things like this on the news and you don’t think it will happen to you, but then it does and you see all this support come out.

‘People I didn’t even know were helping, it was amazing and we are so thankful.

‘We have to just think it could be a lot worse and no one was hurt.

Her son Matt, who works as a technician in a London theatre, said: ‘Growing up you see the great community spirit in Jersey, and it is times like this you really appreciate it. We also want to thank the Fire Service, who have been great.’

Currently, the family are unable to enter the house, which Miss Keywood lived in for more than 30 years, because broken roof tiles contain asbestos.

They are dealing with insurers and hope, in 12 months’ time, they will be able to start turning their burnt-out house into a home again.

Miss Keywood said that since the fire she has been ‘ultra safe’ with everything in her house, and has issued a plea to others in the Island to do the same.

‘We turn everything off at the wall when it is not being used, when we leave the house everything is off,’ she said.

‘It has made a difference in Maufant, people were given advice after the fire and others now do that.

‘It is a bit of a silver-lining from the whole thing and hopefully other people do the same because sometimes this is what can happen.’
