Authorities issue advice ahead of Bonfire Night

And the Fire and Rescue Service has also issued advice to Islanders organising fireworks displays or bonfires ahead of 5 November.

Honorary officers in St Helier this week took to social media to urge businesses to ‘consider your community and restrict who you sell these items to’.

The Twitter post added: ‘Please restrict sale of flour and eggs to over 16s during this Halloween period. For advice or if you have any concerns, call your duty Centenier.’

Fire and Rescue Sevice crew commander John Le Cornu has asked Islanders, where possible, to go to organised fireworks displays to mark Bonfire Night.

However, he said that if people insisted on having their own events, then there were safety measures they could follow. The tips included never going back to a firework that had been lit, clearing long grass from around a bonfire and not using petrol to start the fire. For more advice, visit the gov.je website.

The British Hedgehog Preservation Society are also urging people having bonfires to follow some steps to keep hedgehogs safe.

A spokesman for the group said that bonfires should not be built until the day they are lit or, if they are created beforehand, chicken wire should be placed around the perimeter to stop hedgehogs seeking shelter inside.

Check for hedgehogs inside bonfire stacks before lighting, the spokesman added and, when lighting, only do so from one side so there ‘is an escape route’ for animals.
