Hospital ‘coping but experiencing winter pressure’

In some recent years, the Hospital has had to issue a red alert after staff sickness and a rise in illnesses led to bed shortages.

Although this winter has not seen similar problems, Mr Sainsbury said that he had started to notice a pattern of pressure emerging in the run-up to Christmas.

He stated that the pressure points were coming within critical care but added that the Hospital was coping with the issue.

He explained: ‘In the UK, emergency departments are in constant crisis with ambulances unable to get patients into hospitals.

‘Here that isn’t the case but recently we have started to see a pattern of pressure emerging, particularly within critical care.

‘It has been quite busy in that area and that is just down to the volume of patients we have seen coming in the front door; there isn’t another reason for it.

‘It has certainly been busier than this time last year, but we are coping.’

Mr Sainsbury also said a delay in discharging patients, something Jersey was usually good at managing, had become a slight issue.

He added: ‘The way we manage discharges is different from the UK and usually Jersey is really, really good in that area.

‘That is not the same situation at the moment and there is pressure, as the community services are not there to support them in terms of home care.’
