Islanders ‘never need to fear becoming homeless’

Islanders ‘never need to fear becoming homeless’

The Shelter Trust, which provides accommodation, food and support for around 100 people per night at its four sites, is increasing its outreach programme during the current crisis.

The chairman of the trust, Neville Benbow, said the organisation’s services were as important as ever and that it stood ready to give help to anyone who needed it.

He also revealed that the group had been working with the Health Department to provide checks for all homeless people in the Island.

Mr Benbow said: ‘We are very much “business as usual”. We are still open and we will never turn anyone away.

‘We have extended our outreach scheme from two to three times a week. We’ve had to put restrictions on visitors in place, as the health of people is paramount.

‘So far one person at the shelter has been tested and they were negative. We are working with Health to set up a primary-care clinic at Aztec House, so every homeless
person in the Island can undergo a health check.

‘We’re as busy as ever. That won’t go down as the number of vulnerable people in Jersey goes up. It is not without its pressures, but we are ready for it.

‘We are in a different time, with so much uncertainty surrounding jobs and the economy, but people never need to fear they will be homeless.’

Sanctuary Trust currently houses 24 men in both emergency housing in St Aubin and other independent housing.

Manager Brett Cutts said: ‘There isn’t any reason why we won’t keep providing our services. Things will be continuing as they are. We will keep a roof over people’s heads, whatever it takes.

‘We have had to put new measures in place and we are following all the health advice.’
