St Clement edge closer

ST CLEMENT edged one point closer to the league title, despite being pegged back in a 1-1 draw at lowly St Paul’s on Wednesday night.

That’s because rivals St Peter failed to take advantage, losing 1-0 at Grouville.

It had looked like St Clement were well on their way to their 13th win out of 14 league games, albeit narrowly, after Karl Hinds put them in the lead just before half-time – his 32nd of the season. But with two minutes left to play, a potential future golden boot winner to rival Hinds, Callum Gilroy, equalised with just two minutes left to play.

It could turn out to be a crucial point for St Paul’s in their own battle to avoid relegation. Meanwhile, Grouville took a big step towards their own safety with their win over the defending league champions. Harry Ecobichon scored the only goal of the game.

St Peter are now 11 points behind St Clement with five games left to play, the first of them against bottom side St Ouen tomorrow, while St Clement head to strugglers Jersey Wanderers, knowing that if St Ouen pull off a shock win, they could seal the title with a win themselves.

Wednesday evening also saw Sports Club’s chances of promotion to the top division boosted after coming from behind to win 3-2 at St John. Promotion rivals Sporting Academics will be hoping they come away from the Rec tomorrow with the same result. Meanwhile, the wooden spoon could be decided in the match between the bottom two, First Tower United and St Lawrence. With it being St Lawrence’s last match of the season, nothing less than a win will do.

Dragoes are involved in JFA Bowl quarter-final with St Peter C.

Grouville Reserves have a chance to go top of the Championship 1 division when they host St Clement Reserves, while Jersey Wanderers Reserves welcome bottom club St Helyi. Meanwhile, St Brelade Reserves and St Ouen Reserves meet in the semi-final of the Touzel Memorial Trophy. In the Championship 2 division, Trinity host Grouville C, while there are three games in the Over 35 Division: Portuguese against Grouville, St Paul’s against St Ouen, and St Clement are away to St Lawrence needing just a point to win the title.

On Sunday, the stop-start Women’s League resumes with Jersey Wanderers hosting St Peter. If the hosts fail to win, Rozel Rovers will be champions for the second successive season.
