Man who dealt drugs to friends given probation

Miguel Angelo Teixeira Jardim admitted being concerned in the supply of a legal high and refusing to obey the orders of the police.

The new probation order means that 29-year-old Jardim, of Upper Clarendon Road, was in breach of existing probation and community-service orders and will now have to complete 12 months’ probation in total.

Centenier David Curtis said that a plain-clothes police officer saw Jardim approach a man in the doorway of a property in Belmont Road and exchange a package on 25 January. When they stopped Jardim they found a blue plastic wrap containing a herbal substance in his pocket and he admitted that it was psychoactive substance 5F-ADB. The value of the drugs on that occasion was £20.

After his text messages were analysed, the defendant pleaded guilty to the supply of 16.1g of the illegal substance worth £320.

Centenier Curtis told the court that it was apparent Jardim was purchasing for, and supplying the drug to, the same group of people from November 2016 until January 2017. He added that the defendant was collecting the cash and dispensing the drugs to friends.

Jardim also admitted a charge of obstructing a police officer in the execution of his duties when he failed to move away from another man in West’s Centre in the early hours of 17 March.

Advocate Adam Harrison, defending, said Jardim had been involved in social supply rather than commercial supply of a small amount of drugs.

He said that his client had been drug-free since August, had been attending church regularly since then and had been working as a chef for the past five months.

In respect of the incident at West’s Centre, Advocate Harrison said that his client had reacted after he was insulted by a man. He added that Jardim had apologised to the police officers for his actions when he was at police headquarters that night.

In sentencing, Relief Magistrate Sarah Fitz said: ‘It is very pleasing to hear that in many other ways you have improved your life considerably.’
