Guided walks with the Governor to make a comeback

Local historian Frank Falle has been asked to bring back the walks after a lapse since the previous Lieutenant-Governor left and money to support the events dried up.

A walk in St Lawrence, the first since the events stopped, is due to start at 2.30pm at St Lawrence Church on Sunday 23 June. It will feature a talk on the origins of the parish honorary system and its links to England, the Vikings and how the Jersey cow first came to the Island. A second walk is planned in Grouville.

Mr Falle said he was asked to bring the walks back by Government House and the Chief Minister and has made changes to make them self-funded.

‘It was beginning to diminish in popularity and after 20 years, support was beginning to waiver,’ he said. ‘But it has now had a breather and will be back with a new self-funding arrangement.’

Tickets for the walks, which will be guided, are £10 with money going to the Gurkha Welfare Trust with the amounts matched by Jersey Overseas Aid.

There will also be a £5 charge to pay for refreshments at parish halls, insurance and information leaflets.

When the walks started, up to 130 people would take part, according to Mr Falle, who is hoping for a good turnout. He added that he is hoping other people will take over the organisation of the walks if they prove popular again.

‘An important object of this first walk will be to assess potential support for re-introducing these once popular walks and ideas for their improvement.’ he said.

‘My hope is the turnout will be strong and that we could plan on having at least three guides for the next walk, which is the Grouville walk.’

Those interested in taking part in the St Lawrence event should meet at the parish church at 2.30pm on Sunday 23 June.
