The sat tests, which have come under heavy criticism in the UK for placing too much pressure on very young children in exam-like conditions, will be replaced by a new emphasis on teacher assessment. The decision by the Education, Sport and Culture Committee follows a trial in which five primary schools worked without sats for a year, reporting good results.Although the sat tests will continue to be used in a variety of informal ways as part of the assessment for school children, seven-year-olds will now be assessed in English and maths on the basis of what their teachers say about them, through a validated system.
