Addressing the productivity puzzle

IN today’s fast-paced business environment, the quest for increased productivity is more crucial than ever but, arguably, the economic prospects for both Jersey and Guernsey look challenging without systemic change.

The view from the Institute of Directors branches in both islands has led the organisations to plan what they describe as a “unique event” in which business leaders in Jersey and Guernsey will collaborate to address some of the challenges facing firms which are striving to boost efficiency and output.

The breakfast event, on 18 April, is titled Productivity PowerUp: Jersey and Guernsey Navigating Challenges for Business Success, and aims to delve into the dynamic world of productivity enhancement.

Running concurrently in both islands, the event will feature a panel of business leaders from both islands, who will interact virtually to discuss how the office environment, corporate culture, mindset, workforce wellbeing and technology integration all have a part to play in boosting productivity.

The panel comprises Rory Inglis, managing director of POS interiors, Lindsay Hart, sales and marketing director of NP Group, Paul Murphy, chief executive of Jersey Business and Dan Hare, founder of Continuum. The session, which has been supported by C5 Alliance, BDO and Skipton International, will be moderated by IoD Jersey chair Natasha Egré.

“The islands have a long and close relationship, and it is more important than ever that we collaborate on topics which are shared challenges for both Guernsey and Jersey. We are delighted to join forces with our IoD colleagues in Jersey to stage this unique event, which will enable audiences and panellists in both islands to engage in this important topic to drive continued economic prosperity,” said Glen Tonks, IoD Guernsey chair.

“The hybrid format of the event means we can still enjoy face-to-face networking time before technology takes over to bring the two events together for what I am sure will be a lively and interactive session.”

Ms Egré added: “In Jersey and Guernsey, we are working in island environments that have finite resources and infrastructure to support continued population growth. Therefore, it’s of paramount importance that we look at productivity measures to achieve economic growth. So many elements from technology, to culture and skills have a direct impact on the productivity of a business, which in turn drives the profitability, competitiveness and long-term viability of organisations. Through this combined event with IoD Guernsey, we hope to share ideas and the expertise of our panel to help support businesses in achieving sustainable efficiency.”

The event will begin at 8am with a light breakfast and networking opportunity before the organisation chairs introduce the panel at 8.30am. Taking place at BDO’s offices in Jersey and at C5 Alliance in Guernsey, the event will run until 10am, featuring both a panel discussion and question-and-answer session.
