Teenager dies after car pursued by police crashes into wall

A teenager has died after a car being pursued by police crashed into a wall in Stalybridge, Greater Manchester, on Tuesday evening.

Greater Manchester Police said a 16-year-old boy was pronounced dead at the scene of the collision in Wakefield Road.

Officers were called to a report of an attempted burglary in Ambleside, Stalybridge, shortly after 6pm, and followed a Volkswagen Golf thought to be involved.

The car then collided with the wall at about 6.30pm and a second teenager, also aged 16, was taken to hospital in a serious condition.

Inquiries are continuing and a cordon is in place while an investigation takes place.

GMP said the incident had been referred to its Professional Standards Branch and the Independent Officer for Police Conduct (IOPC) in line with standard procedure.

The IOPC said in a statement it had launched an independent investigation “into the actions of the police” prior to the crash.

“Our investigators are attending the scene of the collision and the post-incident procedures,” the IOPC said.

“Our thoughts are with the families of the two 16-year-olds and all of those affected.”

Anyone with information is asked to phone 101 and quote incident number 2146 of 03/11/20.
