Can Island herd remain closed to all imports ?

The report, which is due to be completed by August, will define the future of the Island breed for some time to come, according to the chief executive of the Royal Jersey Agricultural and Horticultural Society, James Godfrey. The society has commissioned the report following the restructuring of the dairy industry last year, in which around 20 per cent of the Island’s breeding herd was exported.Mr Godfrey said: ‘We are obviously concerned about how sustainable the Island herd is, in terms of closed breeding, and we wanted to seek advice on it.

We also wanted to make sure that the breeding programmes and the practices that are used are appropriate to the level of the cattle population that we now have, and are sustainable in the long term’.
