Cann sprints in after cyclists fail to escape

With the race scheduled for 50 minutes plus five laps, Caesarean Cycling Club’s Jamie Barker was first to escape on the second lap and he opened up a ten second gap before being hauled back into the main group. After several laps he pulled clear again, only to be caught for a second time, and other attempts, notably by Chris Spence, Vélo Sport’s Steve Goaziou and Ali Cann were also short lived. With a strong following wind the race was run at a tremendous pace, and Spence seemed to have broken the pack when, with five laps remaining, he broke clear. It was too little, too early, however, for he was again hauled back into the pack, and although Goaziou also made another effort to break free close to home, he was caught and, reluctantly, climbed off with one lap to go.Into the finishing straight for the last time and there followed a charge for the line by the ten leading riders.Cann took the sprint by two lengths from a resigned Spence, with Sam Firby claiming third place. In the Juniors, Ladies and Veteran categories for a race over 25 minutes plus two laps Vélo Sport riders veteran Andy Munns and junior rider Richard Tanguy escaped and rode strongly together for the whole of the race, eventually lapping several of the field. Both riders cruised across the line at the finish, with Munns just edging out Tanguy.Vélo Sports’ Tony Williams led the charge for the minor placings, edging out fellow veteran Rob Miere for third place.

Island Games rider Ruth Bonney took the ladies’ award.Circuit Championships – 20 JulyMen – 50 min + 5 laps: 1, Ali Cann (Caes); 2, Chris Spence (Caes); 3, Sam Firby (Caes); 4, Jim Garrett (Velo); 5, Steve Greig (Caes); 6, Jamie Barker (Caes); 7, Andy Hamon (Caes); 8, Andy Kemp (Caes); 9, David Jardine (Caes); 10, Simon Smith (Caes); 11, Richard Tanguy (Vélo) @ 1 lap.Ladies, Juniors, Veterans – 25 min + 2 laps: 1, Andy Munns (Vélo) first vet; 2, Richard Tanguy (Vélo) first jun; 3, Tony Williams (Vélo) vet; 4, Rob Mière (Ceas) vet; 5, Tony Cooke (Vélo) vet; 6, Bob Banks (Caes) vet; 7, Paul Lipscombe (Vélo) vet; 8, Dave Le Breton (Vélo) vet; 9, Allan Miller (Caes) vet; 10, Peter Hubert (Caes) vet; 11, Bob Cabot (Vélo) vet; 12, Mike Harris (Caes) vet; 13, Ruth Bonney (Vélo) first lady @ 1 lap; 14, Harvey Brookfield (Vélo) vet; 15, Tim Bailey (Caes) jun; 16, Simon Bailey (Caes) vet; 17, Ben du Feu (Caes) jun; 18, Mick Le Tourneur (Vélo) vet.
