Thousands of the creatures are dying on beaches around the Island as their sandy environment absorbs the summer heat.Sea fisheries officer Greg Morel explained that the high temperatures had increased the amount of bacterial activity in the sand, reducing the oxygen levels.
The worms have therefore been moving to the higher sand, which in turn has been too hot for them.Their subsequent attempts to escape by making their way to the surface were resulting in the worms dying in the direct sunlight, which they were unable to withstand, Mr Morel explained.
