Recycle more or face bigger bills’

That was the stark warning from Environment and Public Services president, Deputy Maurice Dubras, as he embarks on a two-year quest to develop a waste strategy to serve the Island into the second half of the 21st century.Consultation on the strategy will involve the parishes, States departments, the public, professionals in Jersey and UK and European experts.’We have got to be willing to set aside our sacred cows and decide what’s best for us as a community.

It is for the community to decide,’ he said.

‘The government makes specific decisions but this is about what the parishes and people across the Island want for the future.’To develop the strategy, Deputy Dubras has formed a waste steering group, comprising Environment Committee member Deputy Rob Duhamel, Deputy Geoffrey Grime from Finance and Economics, and Health president Senator Stuart Syvret. The group’s key aim is to come up with a sustainable, realistic, achievable and affordable strategy for managing the Island’s waste for the next 50 years.
