Firms want changes to ‘snooper’ law

The States debate on the Draft Regulation of Investigatory Powers (Jersey) Law will now be delayed while the Home Affairs Committee consult the industries which it will affect.

The law is based on the UK ‘snoopers charter’ that covers interception of communications, surveillance, spying and the handing over of encryption keys to law enforcement agencies. It was lodged in June and was due to be debated early next month, but Home Affairs will ask for a delay after businessmen and States Members walked out of a meeting last week to discuss it.
