Speeding campaign heralds start of new term

The crackdown has been timed to coincide with the beginning of the new school term to remind drivers to slow down for students.Despite regular campaigns involving honorary and States police officers, excessive speed is still the main cause of accidents in the Island.

So far this year, there have been 50 accidents in which speed has been a contributory factor.

Of those, people were injured in 20 of them.Last year, there were 343 road accidents where people were injured and in 42 of those, someone was seriously hurt.Officers will be out in force between today and Wednesday, when the schools go back, at known hotspots, where police data show speeding and accidents are most prevalent.Special attention will be paid to areas close to schools.Police road safety officer Philip Blake said: ‘We have deliberately picked the start of the school autumn term as a good time to remind people about taking care with the speed of their driving.

Many youngsters will be walking in to school or walking home again in the evening and it is important that motorists pay extra attention to the way they are driving.’
