Misleading text messages cost firm £2,000 fine

Speed Tone Ltd, whose address is 35-37 New Street – although the company is not physically based in Jersey – was fined by the Independent Committee for the Supervision of Standards of Telephone Information Services, the national regulator for premium rate telecoms services.

he committee upheld a number of complaints concerning a text message that told recipients that they had won a prize and invited them to call a premium rate number to claim.

he prize was ‘Nike goodies’ and the message suggested that the service was being run by, or in conjunction with, the US sportswear company – which wasn’t the case.

The message also failed to state the maximum call cost or inform callers that they should get the bill payer’s permission before calling.

The service also exceeded the £3 maximum allowed.

s well as the fine, access to the service has also been stopped for 12 months.

Speed Tone did not respond to the ICSTIS during its investigation.
