Surf kayak team back in action

We have sunshine, we have an offshore breeze and, most importantly, we have serious waves – and we’ve just got a first place in a heat,’ said Team Jersey manager Stuart McGlinchey earlier this morning.Speaking from the beach at Tallaghn he said that Ailsa McDougall had surfed to a first place in her heat of round one in the ladies high performance (HP) class; Zona Michel was second in her heat and newcomer Jemma Jelley third, while junior Robert O’Brien also had a third, and, as he was speaking, Gary Edwards was on the water ‘and surfing well.’After losing almost two days of the individual competition because there were no waves it was a relief to all the team to be able to get back onto the water, McGlinchey said.’The women’s and juniors’ HP heats are going on now, their heats are still 20 minutes long.

In the men’s international class which will be held tomorrow – if the waves hold – the heats will all be cut to 15 minutes.’Paul Perchard, Chris Ollivier and McGlinchey are through to the next round of the men’s internationals along with James Robertson and Robert Hearne, with the latter two also through to the next round of the men’s HP class; Zona Michel is through to the quarter-finals and junior Robert O’Brien competes in the semi-finals.The finals were due to have been surfed tomorrow afternoon but yesterday’s non-event means everything could be delayed until Sunday.’We’re due to travel back on Sunday but if the event is still running and Jersey paddlers are in the finals we’ll find ways of stayng,’ McGlinchey said.
