Bowls:Foord holds her own in Australia

Oddly, her opening match with Lalu Kisokel, from Papua New Guinea, was delayed, after the vivacious South Sea islander was held up on arrival in Brisbane because she did not have a valid visa. When she eventually turned up on Saturday, Kisokel played gallantly to take a set off Brenda, who was relieved to win the first two ends of a best-of-three-ends tiebreak, and get home, 7-5, 5-10, 2-0.Coming up against England champion, Helen Wall, an ex NHL hockey goalkeeper, Brenda was always in trouble, but did well to close the gap in the first set to a single shot at 8-9.Wall controlled the second set for a 9-8, 9-3 straight-sets victory, before the Jersey star took on former Commonwealth Games gold medallist Marie Watson, from New Zealand, in the third round.Watson, who finished the weekend with a 100 per cent record, and emerged as favourite to take the title, won 9-4, 13-5, but Foord bounced back in the fourth round when she came up against Maureen Payne, from the Isle of Man.Hitting good form, she finished well in both sets, pushing on to win the first 9-4 after the scores were level, 4-4, after six ends, and the second 12-4 after tying 4-4 after four.Others in Foord’s section include Shirley Baylis (Botswana), Clarice Fitzpatrick (Canada), Kitha Bailey (Norfolk Island), Val Sherry (Spain), Liz James (Swaziland) and Liz Landry (Zimbabwe). If she can manage to finish in the top four in her group league table, she will qualify for a place in the quarter finals, which will be played on Thursday.
