Knife vistim: ‘Why am I being told these lies?’

It is claimed that Maria Caboz’s husband José (33) tried to kill his wife on 18 April last year after he stabbed her five times with a kitchen knife.

He admits stabbing her but denies attempting to kill her.He also denies committing a grave and criminal assault on her when he allegedly tried to force her into the boot of his car because she would not give him any money to spend on drink and gambling.Mrs Caboz is now into the third day of her evidence against her husband in an Assize trial, which is expected to last two weeks. The jury has heard that as she tried to walk through the front door of her Colomberie home Mr Caboz attacked her with the knife, eventually leaving her slumped on the floor with the knife still sticking in her back.Under further cross-examination this morning Mrs Caboz again had to relive the terrifying attack by her husband.

But defence Advocate Rui Tremoceiro put his client’s version of the attack to Mrs Caboz, prompting her to laugh on a number of occasions and to ask the court: ‘Why am I being told these lies?’.Commissioner Francis Hamon said to her: ‘Mrs Caboz, this is what your husband is going to say when he is in the witness box.

Therefore if this is not true you must say it’s not true.’ Mrs Caboz replied: ‘Of course it is not true – I am not stood here lying.’The trial continues.
