Hockey:Herbert girls lead the way to England trials

West of England U15s started their tournament with a 2-1 win against the East team, with Jamey key in the creation of both goals – the first following a penalty corner she had won, the second from her right wing cross. In their second match West were outplayed by the Midlands team, losing 3-1, but it was Jamey’s goal from an individual run that took her team to a 2-2 draw with the North of England team.Their final game of the tournament was against South.

The overall U15 results in the tournament were so close that a win would have secured second place, but a defeat would result in a three-way tie for equal third.

Regrettably it was a defeat: despite this, the Jersey girl ran tirelessly in midfield, driving her team on and scoring a consolation goal from a short corner strike.

Jamey was joint top goal-scorer for West in the competition; the Midlands team were championsJamey has been selected for England trials at U16 level, a terrific opportunity to take the next step forward in her hockey career.Meanwhile her sister Beckie captained the West Under 17 side to an overall second place.

They secured two wins and a draw, losing only to eventual winners, South. In their first game, against East, the match was drawn.

An injury to a fellow-England player meant that Beckie had to play in a deep, sweeper role.

She coped well and in the next game against North even managed to move forward to score from a neat short corner in a 4-3 win.The match against South was the tournament decider and was somewhat anti-climactic, with South winning easily, 5-2, although Beckie contributed to the scoring with a well taken penalty flick.

In the final game against Midlands, the West team ran out 3-0 winners with Beckie leading by example, with another short corner goal and, like Jamey, was West’s top goal-scorer.Beckie will trial for England at U18 level, having already played at international level in both U18 and U21 categories.Trials will take place over Christmas and New Year at Bisham Abbey and Lilleshall hockey centres in the UK.
