League Hockey: Ladies put Crusaders to the sword

JWHA 4, Crusaders 3: The game was an exciting and fast-flowing one, the women scoring first with a deft reverse flick from Lisa Phillips after the JWHA split the Crusaders’ defence with a pass in to the D from the left.Simon Garton replied with a great deflection from five yards out but before half time Helen Wiseman was on hand to slip the ball in to an open goal after Jamey Herbert’s skilful play down the right eliminated the Crusaders’ goalkeeper.

Crusaders again replied, this time with an impressive flick by Sam Cooper from the edge of the circle. With the score at 2-2 both teams returned to the pitch after half time in positive mood.Cooper scored again for Crusaders, in similar style to his first, and Jamey Herbert again combined with Wiseman for the latter to score her second. The JWHA ladies’ skill, together with some great passing moves particularly in their attacking circle, saw them begin to dominate the second half. They left it late to make certain of the win, however, as the scoreline was still 3-3 with five minutes to go, and Crusaders were always dangerous on the break.

Janet Masterman and Tracy Vallois combined well at the back for the JWHA, and worked hard to release the ball early. As the JWHA continued to press forward they were rewarded with a short corner and Shelagh Herbert stepped up to crash the ball against the back board for the Ladies’ fourth goal, leaving Crusaders no time to reply.
