Bankrupt businessman owes more than £90m

A list of banks, businesses and individuals who claim to be owed money by Mr Leech – who at one stage was a billionaire on paper before he was declared en désastre in the Royal Court last October – has been made available for public inspection by the Viscount’s Department.

In what is probably the largest personal bankruptcy ever in Jersey, the list reveals that Mr Leech owes £90.7m to creditors – the lion’s share owed to the bank that originally applied for Mr Leech to be declared bankrupt, HSBC.

The bank is owed over £88m, significantly more than the £22m that was quoted when the bankruptcy was declared last year.In addition to the £90m list of claims that have been filed, a second list totalling just over £5m records contingent claims which are mostly guarantees that may or may not have to be met.

This reveals a £1.6m claim by Barclays International Corporate Services and £2.5m allegedly owed to Burger King, the fast-food franchise which Mr Leech brought to Jersey in 1997 and which opened in Beresford Street and St Brelade.
