Senator steps in over couple’s rates bill row

He has called on the Constable of St Clement, Derek Gray, to ‘sort this out’ before more damage is done to the reputation of the public sector in the Island.Senator Syvret e-mailed the Constable last night after reading in the JEP about the plight of Colin and Maureen Smith.

A two-month saga that started when they wrote out a cheque with the accidental over-payment has culminated in their being chased by a debt collection agency and threatened with court for non-payment.

In his e-mail, the Senator wrote: ‘Having read the story on the front of tonight’s JEP, can I suggest – and offer the advice – that you rethink the parish stance on this matter without delay?
