Le Rocquier makes the grade this time round

In an official report released today the percentage of lessons classified as satisfactory or better at the school was rated higher than the UK average and Ofsted inspectors said that the quality of teaching and learning had improved significantly, with the school having good leadership and a clear vision for the future.Last November a similar report said that teaching and learning, leadership and management and attitudes and behaviour were unsatisfactory.

Teachers and pupils were told that had Le Rocquier been in the UK it would have been classified as a failing school.Usually inspectors would not return to the same school for another six years but the results were so low last year that a seven-strong team returned last month to undertake another examination.Their report read: ‘Since the previous review GCSE results have improved, behaviour is much better and there is a feeling among staff that the school is being given direction.’It said that under the new headteacher, Richard Rolfe , leadership was good and management effective, with the school running smoothly on a day-to-day basis.

It also rated almost one third of lessons as very good or excellent. The news was greeted with enthusiasm by Mr Rolfe, who has been at the school since the start of this academic year.He said: ‘It is particularly pleasing to have this report as we were inspected under the new Ofsted framework which came into force in September 2003.

All the targets for making the grade have been tightened up and we passed with flying colours.’I am also happy that not one department was classified as unsatisfactory and many heads of department were considered to be very good leaders and managers who have led their teams of teachers to what is clearly a successful report.’
