He now plays for Guernsey’s table-topping Hampshire Division I RFC 1st XV, having returned to the Channel Islands after qualifying as a teacher to work at St Sampson’s Secondary School. Before university he was at boarding school but his roots are in this Island, not the one across the water, and he has played at both Youth and 2nd team level for Jersey RFC before.RibApparently his teammates, who he describes as ‘a great bunch of boys,’ rib him about his roots but that hasn’t stopped him scoring tries for them – three, for example, against Sandown and Shanklin, a team that Les Quennevais will meet in the next round of the Hampshire Plate.Apparently before qualifying as a teacher he captained Brighton University, played for Lewes and then Rochford and was part of the team which won the Essex Cup.His ambition, not unnaturally, is to win the Hampshire Division I title with his club – that, he says, and: ‘to win the Siam Cup, of course.’Paul’s younger brother Mark has a similar ambition – but his is to help Jersey’s U14s to victory in their Siam Cup clash in April.
