Jersey raises funds for Iran earthquake victims

With the death toll predicted to reach 50,000, some 30,000 injured and an estimated 100,000 left homeless, Jersey Aid for Europe and the British Red Cross in Jersey have joined forces to raise emergency funds.Jersey Aid for Europe secretary Steve Foster said cash was needed to cover the costs of the British International Rescue Corps, which responded immediately to the Boxing Day disaster centred on the ancient Silk Route city of Bam.Mr Foster said that even though rescue work would soon be wound up, as the likelihood of finding anyone alive in the ruins faded, cash was urgently needed to cover the corps’ costs.

And, he added, millions of pounds was needed to help the survivors as they struggled to cope.
