But despite the massive increase in police activity this year, 31 people were arrested on suspicion of drink driving, compared with 21 arrested the year before when 5,216 drivers were stopped.P insp Sara Garwood said that in terms of enforcement, the campaign had been a great success.She added: ‘The success of this campaign is not only down to the co-ordinated efforts of the States and Honorary officers who dedicated time to road checks, but to the Islanders who listened and responded positively to our initiative.’There will always be those who drink and drive, but overall we feel this campaign has had a significant impact on reducing the risks to everyone who used the the roads over Christmas.’Of the 31 arrested this year, 20 have now been charged with drink driving and four have been released without charge.

The remaining seven are still awaiting the findings of blood analyses.Four of the 31 were arrested as a result of car crashes, five because of the driving and the remainder in random road checks.Just five of the 31 were women and average age of the men stopped was 33, and of the women, 46.The average alcohol level detected by breath tests was just over twice the legal limit.During Guernsey’s Christmas crackdown, 22 motorists were arrested for drink driving.

The police there said that they were disappointed with the result, which showed a very slight decrease compared to previous years.
