Salmon sales remain steady

Despite worries that harmful chemicals from the fish food may lead to forms of cancer, orders and sales over the weekend are as strong as ever. And one of the leading dealers in seafood in the Island believes consumers are fed up of ‘yet another food scare’.Sean Faulkner, owner of Faulkner Fisheries, said: ‘We heard about this on Friday along with everyone else and at this stage it is too early to say what the long-term effect is going to be.

But our sales over the weekend were as normal and our orders for the week are the same as they were last week.’This does make me wonder if the consumer has been numbed by one food scare after another.

We do not see what the salmon are being fed but some of my customers and myself have been eating salmon for years and have never had any problems.

Although I am not aware of the full facts behind the report, the chemicals that are in the food are similar to those that feed pigs, cattle and ducks, so I am wondering if there are some sour grapes coming from America here.’Oily fish, such as salmon and sardines, are eaten almost daily on the Mediterranean because the omega three oils in the fish are easily digested by the body and are very good for the heart, and people in that region have far less heart complaints than people here and in the UK.’We may see some effect later in the month but so far all the indications are that sales are continuing as normal.’
